I will say SKILLS get you out of poverty. I know too many folks who waited til the last MINUTE to go get a skill because they had a kid, or lost another job or whatever the case may be. Majority of those dudes and a couple ladies I witnessed joined the army, became truck drivers, and moved up in a company. Will hard work get you out of poverty not necessary but a consistent income will, not getting new phones, new cars, new anything for a while might.
I know a family who mom and dad lost jobs, and book teenagers in family worked at dairy queen and taco bell. When both mother and father got new jobs they went out and got NEW cars. BOTH parents had new vehicles even though the previous months, they lost internet, cable, low on food, made the kids give all their paycheck to them. My mom immediately said that’s just stupid. The funny part they questioned how my single parent mom had a two story house, on the lake with multiple paid off cars. GUESS what those cars are PAID off, those cars are older, and its called discipline. Is every case the same, no, things happen all the time. Sickness, low paying job, lack of opportunity but at the end of the day its how you react to things.
Many times people forget people 76% of Americans live check to check. If you miss a couple checks you may have a WHOLE new reality. People are not being taught ACCOUNTING in school or at home. Another aspect many of my friends got married right out of high school and college. two incomes together you have A little flexibility of one of you loses a job. Now I know a TON a folks got married right out of college (ECU years) and I can look back over 10 years and SEE the income/lifestyle difference of those folks who have skills or had a spouse to work with them (two incomes).
A great BOOK is Eugene Robinson Disintegration of america. he is talking about black people but it can be applied to ALL Americans. transcendent, emergent, mainstream and the abandoned. work works when nothing else does.
many people who before could work at a factory, work blue collar jobs with no high school diploma, and other issues are being sidelined. Many folks wait until backed into a corner or unemployment to go into fields that are lucrative 50-90k but aren’t white collar glamorous. One of the shows i love is blue collar millionaires. 9 times out of 10 the local plumber, hvac repair, electrician or construction guy becomes a HIGH earner $100,000-$200,000 at least once in his life because he gets SO much consistent work. That’s the point consistent work.
If you knew it could take 7 years and then you could retire would you focus on that income generation? YEs of course you would, but people have fallen into a cycle of debt for new cars, new houses and new STUFF. I want you to check out Mr Money Mustache about 7 years to retire idea.
I will share a view from Carolinas. I know many who make 30k and their spouse makes 30k. They usually buy a 60,000 house, and two 10,000 cars. Maybe some student loan debt. The baseline of their bills together maybe 1000-1500 (mortgage, car payments, insurance). So together 4-5,000 a month they feel FREE to spend more. NOPE. I know couples who spent first 3 years getting cars paid off, and then throwing tax refunds at mortgage and then almost debt free. many people could feel that freedom too, but the average american moves every 9 years, and buys new cars every 3 years. That’s insane. the average job last 2. 5 years now. the average car payment is 400-500 dollars then add on 100-300 for new car insurance every month you are shelling out 500-800 dollars for a car. Imagine freeing up 500-900 dollars a month. If its a couple that’s 1000-1800 of your monthly income. The simple facts remain I know more people who live southeast united states who travel more, live more, go on vacations more not BECAUSE they choose to purchase vehicles and homes that have the ability to be paid off quickly.
there are so many things I want to do, but realize it takes time, discipline and consistent work to get there. Its important to remember you can plan vacations, trips, new clothes, new phones, after you get your things in order.
My family plans out our annual corporation meeting/vacation a week after thanksgiving on carnival cruises. we make payments for a year to bring all 30 family members aboard. No one can complain or say they don’t have the money, because it usually comes down to 100 dollars a month.
at the end of the day work works will nothing else will, it will show you who you are and how you can change if you want to.
